On June 11, 2023 the Tony Awards took place in New York City and finally the winners have been announced! The musical Kimberly Akimbo got the most Tony Awards, and Leopold City is the biggest winner in theatrical plays.

5 2023 Tony Awards: Kimberly Akimbo
The musical Kimberly Akimbo is the big winner among Broadway shows. It was nominated in 8 categories and managed to win a total of 5 Tony Awards. Thus, it was awarded in the catogories of “Best Musical”, “Best Book of a Musical” and “Best Original Score”.
In addition to that, it received two individual awards: Victoria Clark received it for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical” and Bonnie Milligan received it for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical”.

4 Tony Awards 2023: Leopoldstadt
The play Leopoldstadt was nominated a total of 6x and could clear 4 Tony Awards at once. So it was awarded in the important category “Best Play”. Brandon Uranowitz won as “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play”, Brigitte Reiffenstuel in the category “Best Costume Design of a Play” and Patrick Marber as “Best Direction of a Play”.

4 Tony Awards 2023: Some Like It Hot
The musical Some Like It Hot was just as successful. Individual awards include J. Harrison Ghee for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role,” Casey Nicholaw in “Best Choreography,” Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter in “Best Orchestrations,” and Gregg Barnes in the
“Best Costume Design of a Musical” category.
Yet, for me, it also kind of counts as one of the losers of this year’s Tony Awards because it was nominated the most overall of all the entrants – a total of 13x.

3 Tony Awards 2023: Life of Pie
In total, Life of Pie was among the nominees in 6 categories – and in half, they were among the award winners. Tim Hatley and Andrzej Goulding won in the Best Scenic Design of a Play category, and two other awards went to Tim Lutkin in Best Lighting Design of a Play and Carolyn Downing for Best Sound Design of a Play.
2 Tony Awards 2023:
Sweeney ToddI wonder if the actors in Sweeney Todd are happy about their 2 awards. I think their joy is a bit clouded – they were nominated in 8 categories, after all. Natasha Katz received in the category “Best Lighting Design of a Musical” and Nevin Steinberg for “Best Sound Design of a Musical”.

Parade has a similar rate – they were nominated 6x and managed to win two awards. They are the winner in the category “Best Revival of a Musical” and Michael Arden received the individual award for “Best Direction of a Musical”.

After three nominations, Sean Hayes can rejoice in his award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.”

There was a Tony Award for the musical Shucked. Alex Newell is the winner of the category “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.” However, since it was nominated 9 times, it is among the big losers of the Tony Awards.

Among the big losers of the 2023 Tony Awards is &Juliet, which was nominated a total of 9 times and did not win a single award. The Musical Some Like It Hot is also among them: it was the most nominated musical (13 nominations) and yet in the end could win “only” 4x.
With one win out of 9 nominations, both Shucked and New York, New York are certainly not happy about their performance.
