What To Do in the VI during COVID-19

The world as we know it (or knew it) has been ripped from beneath us like a rug. We recognize that these are scary times and the uncertainty is draining us all. It is important to maintain our health now more than ever and to be overly cautious about spreading germs throughout the island and community. However, we are the lucky ones who are “stuck” here in the Caribbean.

It is so easy to get sucked into the cushions of your couch (I did that for about a week), but right now and more than ever, we have the time to enjoy our surroundings. Alone time doesn’t have to be boring, so here at What To Do VI we want to help you keep up the morale, keep yourself moving, and support as many local businesses and people as possible. Here are a few ideas to spark some motivation for you…

Get up and Get OUT!

A good sweat never hurt anybody. Exercise is going to play a huge factor in how you feel when this is over. Although the beaches and trails were just closed, that doesn’t mean you cannot walk your neighborhood (staying 6 feet away from people). The beaches will reopen soon enough, and when they do, we will feel all the more grateful for this beautiful place we live. Until then, get out on your patio, take a walk, bask in the sunlight– it is the most beautiful time of the year down here, take it in.

Plan a romantic, socially secluded date for your quarantine honey

We all have our secret spots that we like to take our significant other to. If you’re lucky enough to be quarantined with yours, plan a little picnic since date nights are nonexistent for the foreseeable future. You can start by getting the fixings for your picnic from a local business like the Northside Grind. They have a full deli, convenience store and a full menu of sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, and more. You simply call in your order and they bring it right out to you for curbside pickup. Romance doesn’t have to go out the window with all this happening, you just have to get a little creative.

Spring Cleaning

Springtime is upon us and there is no better way to kickstart that than will a massive clean and purge of all things that aren’t serving you anymore. Take it day by day and go through your closet, your pantry, your car, and make a pile that can benefit others. When this is all over, and it will be over, our community is going to need donations and the help from everyone around. Light a candle, blast some music and make it fun while you’re at it.

Yoga and Fitness

Technology is a beautiful thing and a lot of local studios and gym have had to resort to teaching classes online. This is the perfect segway to getting into yoga or fitness in general as a beginner because you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Studios like Abounader Fitness, Breathe, Reebok CrossFit, and Rocke City Fitness are just a few that are offering alternate ways to stay connected with their students. Check their social media pages or follow some of the instructors to get a heads up on when they’ll be teaching and how you can get started.

Sign up here for Abounader’s affordable $20/month virtual program!

All of the students have been displaced from their classrooms abruptly. Change in routine can be difficult for learners and this situation is unlike any other, but they must keep learning. If you are proficient in a certain subject, post and reach out about online tutoring or teaching. Anything helps and it is going to be important to keep the youth on track and focused.

Humane Society

The local Humane Society is overflowing with loving cats and dogs. Since we are home, there is no better time than now to foster a little puppy or kitten who needs attention around the clock. If you don’t want to foster, there are other ways to help. The dogs that don’t get fostered still need to go on walks and get exercise. Give them a call and see what they need because anything helps. 340-775-0599 and you can find their Facebook page here and lot’s of videos and good information!

We hope some of these ideas help ease the restlessness that COVID-19 has brought or sparks something in you to make this most of this time. What matters most is our knowledge on the virus and what we can do to keep it from spreading. Remember to keep your distance from people that are not in your household and take all necessary precautions when you have to venture out into the public. Also, shop as local as possible because it is the local people and businesses that make the Virgin Islands such a pleasant place for us all to reside in. This is what is going to keep our economy rolling down here when the world is done adjusting. There are still places open serving the public and risking their own health to provide us all with their services. Let’s use them and greet them with gratitude and love. When all of this is said and done, we get to be the ones that look back on this tragic time that struck the entire world and say we were in the Caribbean making the best of the situation.
